La carrière de Wilson et sa vie domestique sont en lambeaux quand il se réunit. Le Dr Robert Holbrook Smith est également aux prises avec un problème d'alcool. Les deux forment un groupe de soutien qui devient la base de l'organisation Alcooliques Anonymous. L'histoire d'un courtier en valeurs mobilières ayant échoué, son procès et ses tribulations pour vaincre sa dépendance à l'alcool. Il n’est peut-être pas surprenant que pendant son séjour à l’hôpital et sous l’influence de substances psychoactives puissantes et morphoriques, il subisse un réveil spirituel qui l’encourage à développer le programme en douze étapes d’Alcooliques Anonymes avec le Dr Bob Smith. est connu dans les cercles des investisseurs boursiers comme étant le 13e Stepper original. Basé sur la véritable histoire de Bill W., un courtier en valeurs mobilières prospère dont la vie se désagrège après le krach boursier des années 20 et dont il maîtrise son alcoolisme.
