Contenu:The present study is divided into three main parts whose systematic and chronological treatment are interlaced. In the first part the relation between the temperance movement and organization is examined from the upper level of society. Initially the social nature of the alcohol question and its relation to early temperance organization are outlined. Next comes analysis of the role and motives of the Fennomanic educated class in upholding the national temperance organizations. The material mainly used in this part consists of newspapers, annual reports of temperance societies, reports of meetings and other publications, especially the private records of A. A. Granfelt and the Friends of Temperance. In the second part the procedure of study is turned upside down. The part played by the temperance movement in social organization is examined from the bottom upward. We advance as follows: by statistical demonstration the regional propagation and mobility of the movement are first shown, then the relation between temperance organization and the support and geographical emergence of other national bodies. From there we move on to grassroots level. With the aid of membership lists of temperance societies, reports and other material, the character of temperance organization is traced, as well as the social position of the movement, the action taken by it and its meaning for the grassroots individual. The third part contains interpretational analysis. In viewpoint, method and material this part is synthetic. The various levels of temperance work are bound together and temperance organization is linked to the reorganization of Finnish society as a whole at the turn of the century. [Introduction]
